'The major shift in architecture between Vietnam and France'

The podcast endeavors to unravel the tapestry of Asian and Western modernities, drawing inspiration from notable architectural examples in Vietnam and France.

At its core, the exploration commences with the introduction of the overarching concept of 'modernity,' a transformative process shaped by remarkable historical events. To grasp the essence of this concept and discern its diverse manifestations across continents, we delve into the realm of architecture, a tangible reflection of societal modernization.

Through our journey, we shed light on the distinctive architectural landscapes of Vietnam and France, unearthing the catalysts behind their respective transformations. Vietnamese architecture, profoundly impacted by French colonialism, witnessed the dismantling of traditional local constructions in favor of new French-inspired structures, exemplified by the likes of St Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi. Even in contemporary times, Vietnam grapples with the phenomena of 'post-colonialism,' reflected in the proliferation of buildings that bear remnants of French influence or blend regional styles.

On the other hand, our exploration of French architecture reveals a metamorphosis fueled by the burgeoning demand for economic structures that catered to an industrializing society. This led to the birth of novel architectural concepts, replacing traditional forms. Ultimately, we ascertain that both nations have embraced new architectural concepts, diversifying their architectural styles and enriching their cultural fabric.

As the podcast draws to a close, we shine a spotlight on present-day architectural landscapes in both countries. Vietnam, a developing nation, exhibits a yearning for verticality as a symbol of potency, asserting its power, sovereignty, and space. In contrast, France has adopted a balanced approach, cherishing its historic core while progressing with modernization. In essence, both nations navigate the realms of modernity in their distinct ways, reflecting their unique paths forward.

In their quest for modernity, Vietnam reaches skyward, showcasing its strength, while France harmonizes old and new, preserving cherished legacies amidst progress.
